“Following continuous engagement by my Ministry with various agencies, the project ceiling has been approved at RM445 million.
“The upgrading will increase the airport’s passenger handling capacity from 2.0 million to 4.0 million passengers per annum, while enhancing its overall facilities and operational capability,” said Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin during his ministerial winding-up speech at Sarawak Legislative Assembly here today.
Lee who is Senadin Assemblyman (GPS-SUPP) further disclosed that JKR Malaysia, as the implementing agency, will incorporate Sarawak’s unique cultural identity and rich ethnic heritage into the airport’s design, while ensuring that it meets modern airport standards and operational requirements.
The Value Engineering (VE) process was completed in August 2026, while the tender process is currently ongoing, with construction targeted to commence in the second quarter of 2027 and completion expected by 2030, Lee added.
