KUCHING, Dec 29: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap presented the Letter of Award to Syarikat Keririk, the appointed contractor for the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) 2023 project of the upgrading of the pedestrian walkways in Batu 7 in Kota Sentosa, with an approved allocation of RM39,000.
According to a press release, the handover ceremony was held today during a site visit and was witnessed by Kapitan Lee Tho Fung and officers from the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).
The project involves the installation of bullet railings as a safety and security feature, as well as the upgrading of pedestrian walkways constructed over covered drains in the area, as it is expected to enhance pedestrian safety, protect drainage infrastructure, and improve overall environmental management in the area.
Additionally, it aims to deter irresponsible motorists from driving or parking cars and lorries on pedestrian walkways, a recurring issue that has caused structural damage, disrupted water flow, and hindered proper stormwater discharge.
Yap explained that such misuse of pedestrian infrastructure has contributed to flash floods and water ponding during heavy rainfall, posing risks to pedestrians and nearby residents.
“This RTP project is a practical and people-centric solution. By safeguarding pedestrian walkways and ensuring proper drainage flow, we are protecting public safety while addressing recurring flooding issues faced by the community,” he said.
He added that the RTP 2023 initiative reflects the Sarawak government’s commitment to small-scale but high-impact community projects that directly improve grassroots living conditions.
During the visit, Yap also reminded the public to be civic-minded, urging motorists to refrain from parking or driving on pedestrian walkways.
“Pedestrian walkways are built for the safety and convenience of the public, not as parking spaces. Public cooperation is essential to ensure that infrastructure lasts longer and functions as intended,” he stressed. — DayakDaily
