RM20,000 in cash prizes await winners of Sarawak Energy Cup 2017

KUCHING, Nov 24: The much anticipated Sarawak Energy Badminton Tournament is back this year with more than RM20,000 worth of cash prizes to be won.

The tournament, an initiative of Sarawak Energy and in collaboration with Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, will run for a duration of one week, beginning Dec 26. Early round games for matches will be held at the Indoor Stadium MBKS at Jalan Utama, and subsequent matches will be held at Multi Purpose Hall, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, according to a press statement.

The tournament comprises four categories, namely Veteran Men’s Double (45 years and above), Men’s Double, Men’s Double (Invitation Category), and Novice Men’s Double.


The tournament aims to foster closer rapport with potential business partners and at the same time promote a healthy and active lifestyle.

The main prize is the Sarawak Energy Cup with accompanying cash prizes and medals. For the champion the prize is RM8,000, a champion’s trophy and medals while the first runner-up will receive RM4,000 and medals, and semi-finalists will receive RM2,000 each.

The secondary pool champion will be awarded RM2,000 while the first runner-up will receive RM1,000.

Quarter-finalists will bring home RM500 and the consolation pool champion will bag RM500 while the consolation pool first runner-up will receive RM300.

Participation is open to all Sarawakians, permanent residents of Sarawak and those holding work or study permits in Sarawak. The organising committee is again offering the Invitation Category in the Men’s Double, open to all who are not residents of Sarawak.

The tournament will be played on a group league system in the first round and single knock-out system, which consists of quarter-final, semi-final and the final play-off. Each player is permitted to participate in one tie per match and matches will be played on a 21-points on three games system.

There is a registration fee of RM300 per team which is not refundable. Payment is either in cash or crossed cheque made payable to Syarikat SESCO Berhad and should be submitted along with the registration form signed by the appointed team manager.

Participants must also submit either copies of their identity cards, permanent resident’s certificates or study/work permits for the committee’s verification purposes.

The closing date for registration is by 12pm on Dec 21, after which, the draw for the team’s placement will be conducted on at 11am on Dec 22 at Level 2, Menara Sarawak Energy.
