KUCHING, March 8: The Sarawak government has approved and allocated RM200 million for the upgrading of the Stutong Link Road into a two-lane dual carriageway to ease traffic congestion between BDC and Tabuan Tranquillity.
Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak engineer Liew MC stated that the project is currently in the engineering planning and design phase, which is expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year.
Once finalised, the project will proceed to the tendering stage and contractor appointment.
“JKR is expediting the process as we recognise the importance of this project. Once the design is completed, we aim to open it for bidding as soon as possible.
“We hope construction can commence by the end of this year or early 2026, with an estimated completion timeline of 30 months,” he shared during Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng’s ShalLWeeTalk live session today.
Wee emphasised the importance of securing funding before appointing a consultant for the engineering design and planning stages.
He highlighted that the project is crucial for improving traffic flow, particularly along Stutong Road, where congestion is common, especially near SJK Chung Hua No. 2.
The project will involve expanding a 2km stretch from the roundabout near OneTJ to the TT3 traffic light intersection into a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction.
The scope of work includes upgrading the existing Stutong roundabout, constructing a new 90-metre reinforced concrete (RC) bridge over Sungai Stutong parallel to the existing bridge, improving drainage structures and culverts, installing road furniture and pavement markings, and relocating or protecting utility services. — DayakDaily
