RM2.21 bln lost to online scams from 2016-2021

KUCHING, July 28: A total of RM2.21 billion was lost to online scams between 2016 to 2021.

According to Prime Minister Dato Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, recognising the low level of public awareness on the risk of online fraud, the Cyber Security Awareness Master Plan Development Initiative to Address Cyber Fraud Issues was created.

“It is to produce knowledgeable and responsible cyber citizens including to protect the community from becoming victims for cyber criminals,” he said in a statement today.

The matter was discussed during the the first National Social Council (MSN) meeting 2022, chaired by the Prime Minister and attended by senior Ministers, relevant ministers and deputy ministers as well as senior officers of various ministries, departments and agencies.

During the meeting, the council also discussed issues involving empowerment of children released from the Social Welfare Department’s (JKM) care after they reached the age of 18.

For that, Ismail Sabri said, a special team will be created with the participation of government agencies to provide a special path for children who have graduated from JKM institutions to continue their studies both in the fields of skills-training and academics.

He also said government-linked companies (GLCs) will be responsible for providing education funds and placement funds as well as career paths, while Yayasan Kebajikan Negara (YKN) will be the guarantor to help children who graduate from institutions without documents in cooperation the National Registration Department.

“The Social Security Organisation (Socso) and Mara (Majlis Amanah Rakyat) will play a role in providing training and job opportunities after they graduate.

“All this assistance will be coordinated by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development,” he explained.

Ismail Sabri added, the council also agreed to create a Gender Focus Team (GFT) in each ministry and agency in an effort to explore the potential of women in the economy and to bring them into the mainstream in every plan, policy implementation and initiative.

“Meanwhile, the Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill (RUU AGS) 2021 which was passed in the Dewan Rakyat on July 20, 2022 proves the government’s commitment in dealing with the issue of sexual harassment in this country,” he said. — DayakDaily
