SIBU, June 26: Sibu has been allocated RM170 million from the Sarawak government’s RM1.08 billion budget for the statewide replacement of ageing water pipes.

Sibu Municipal council chairman Clarence Ting emphasised that Sibu will benefit from this infrastructure upgrade, targeting old pipes of between 14 and 15 years.

Speaking at today’s council full board meeting, he advised residents to consider installing their own water storage tanks in preparation for potential interruptions in water supply during the upgrade works.

“There are going to be water supply issues in the council area. The public should have their own water tanks as demand for water will be very high,” he said.

Ting also highlighted that the construction of a new RM300 million water treatment plant in Salim is expected to commence operations by the end of 2026.

“Currently, the Salim plant produces 150 megalitres per day (MLD). With the new plant, capacity will double to 300MLD,” he explained.

The Bukit Lima plant, meanwhile, currently has a capacity of 50MLD.

Furthermore, Ting urged councillors to promote water conservation efforts among the public.

“Sibu Water Board has issued a pamphlet titled ‘Use Water Wisely’. I encourage councillors to educate residents on effective water-saving practices,” he said. — DayakDaily
