KUCHING, June 26: The land acquisition and project tender for the construction of RM160 million Batu Kawah Second Bridge with a dual carriageway spanning over 5km will begin soon.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian praised Sarawak Land and Survey Department for swiftly completing the land survey work recently.

“With the completion of the land survey work for the Batu Kawah Second Bridge and new access road, I hope that other related works with the project can also be expedited to ensure that the development can be constructed as soon as possible,” he said in a statement today.

Dr Sim said that due to Batu Kawah’s rapid development, there has been a significant increase in both population and traffic, leading to frequent jams along Jalan Batu Kawah and Datuk Chong Kiun Kong Bridge.

Thus, he hoped that the mega project would help alleviate the current traffic congestion issues.

Dr Sim who has been the Batu Kawah assemblyman since 2016, had also initiated other projects to address the traffic congestion in the constituency.

A number of new access roads have been completed in recent years, including Jalan Tan Sri Wee Boon Ping which connects Jalan Stephen Yong to Mile 4½, the new access road from Kampung Segedup to Jalan Sungai Maong and Matang, and the Kwang Tiong Garden alternative access road.

Additionally, a new access road to Jalan Ensing Timur from Jalan Datuk Tan Men Chong/Jalan Stapok Utama Junction is currently under construction, and a 3km-link road from the Jalan Stephen Yong traffic light through Kampung Segedup to Matang will also be constructed soon.

“All the above new roads have been funded by the Sarawak government.

“However, all road taxes are collected by federal government, hence I urge Sarawak Members of Parliament (MPs) to fight for more federal-funded road development projects to address traffic congestion across Sarawak,” he added. — DayakDaily
