KUCHING, Nov 22: The federal government, through the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW), has approved an allocation of RM15 million to implement the Rural Clean Water Supply Project in the Ulu Roban area.

In a TVS report, Senator Pele Peter Tinggom, a Member of the Dewan Negara, said that out of the total amount, RM720,000 has been allocated for initial works at the project site, which began this year as the first phase of implementation.

According to him, the allocation is the result of continuous efforts brought to the Dewan Negara meetings four times since last year—during the July and December sessions, as well as in February and July this year—to voice the long-standing water supply issues affecting residents in the area.

He said the project is now in the pre-implementation stage, with the tender process being carried out by the ministry, while early works have already begun as a step to ensure the continuity of the project before the full construction phase starts.

He said this when met after a friendly walkabout session at Rumah Panjang Luang Bunsu in Empaong, Ulu Roban, on Friday (Nov 21), which also included a meeting with residents to provide clarification on the project’s progress.

Pele explained that once fully completed, the project is expected to greatly benefit residents of eight longhouses in the Empaong, Ulu Roban area who have long depended on alternative water sources.

He said the project’s scope of work includes the installation of a new piping system, connection to the main water network, and the construction of other supporting infrastructure needed to ensure that clean and treated water can be delivered in a higher-quality and more consistent manner.

He added that he felt relieved that the struggle he began last year has finally borne fruit, with the project receiving full approval from the relevant ministry.

With the early works already underway, he is confident that the project will have a significant impact on improving residents’ quality of life and resolving the long-standing water supply issues. — DayakDaily
