KUCHING, July 15: The Sarawak Royal Malaysian Customs Department foiled an attempt to smuggle 5.23kg of drugs with an estimated street value of over RM1 million into Sibu.

According to a statement by Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya, on June 20 at around 12.10pm, a team of officers from the department’s narcotics unit seized one unclaimed parcel from a courier service company.

“The team conducted a three-day surveillance, but no one came forward to claim the parcel,” said Norizan.

An inspection revealed 12 plastic containers with ‘Vitamin C 1000 tablets’ printed on them, whereby each container held an aluminium package containing pills shaped like the animated cartoon character Doraemon, believed to be Ecstasy (MDMA) with an estimated gross weight of 5.23kg and an estimated value of almost RM1,002,000.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. If convicted, the offender either faces the death penalty or life imprisonment, followed by not less than 15 strokes of the cane.

It was suggested that the drugs were concealed in vitamin supplement containers and smuggled via courier from Peninsular Malaysia to Sarawak.

Norizan called on the public to report any smuggling activities via the department’s toll-free hotline at 1-800-88-8855 or by contacting the nearest Customs office.

He also said that the identities of informants will be kept strictly confidential. — DayakDaily
