Rising flood waters in Kanowit town force shops to close

Seen is the Kanowit Hock Ann Teng Tua Pek Kong Temple located near the riverbank under almost one foot of water.

KANOWIT, Sept 7: Many shops here were forced to close as the town has been badly affected by flood waters since yesterday.

Heavy rain yesterday inundated the town centre under half-to-one-foot of water. On the outskirts, the flood water level was as high as one metre.

The state Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in a statement today warned that water levels are still rising.

The department revealed Jalan Lukut Penyulau which leads to Sibu is not accessible to normal vehicles as it is under one metre of water.

Elsewhere in Jalan Rantau Kemiding, flood waters have risen up to two feet.

Kanowit district education officer Bugin Ragoon when contacted disclosed his department is monitoring the situation.

On the number of schools closed due to the flood, he revealed he was awaiting confirmation from his officers.

“We are still monitoring the situation and my officers are still on the ground doing monitoring,” he said. — DayakDaily
