SERIAN, Sept 19: The Serian Motorcycle Expedition will become an annual event to celebrate Malaysia Day, said Serian MP Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem.

Riot said he started the event in 2018 to promote goodwill bikers who are from various parts of Sarawak.

“Due to the overwhelming response this year, we plan to organise the Serian Motorcycle Expedition again next year to commemorate Malaysia Day,” he told reporters after leading some 320 bikers who participate in the ‘Malaysia Day Santai Ride Serian 2020’ from Kampung Taiee and ended at Tiyab Lanting, Kampung Pichin, some 20 km from here today.

He added that for next year, more events will be organised to make it a more meaningful Malaysia Day celebration.

“We will showcase our culture and tradition. On top of that, we can include sports and family-based activities,” he said.

On Malaysia Day, Riot stressed that it was crucial for the people to commemorate it as it was a historical event when four regions namely Sarawak, North Boneo (Sabah), Singapore and Malaya formed the federation of Malaysia.

“We are blessed because we have been able to live in peace and harmony. So, let’s keep it that way. And always remember that we live in a multi-religious and multi-racial country,” he emphasised.

On a separate issue, Riot who is also the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, disclosed that he has not been able to visit the three countries where he has been assigned due to Covid-19.

“But I have met all the trade representatives from the three countries including the ambassadors of South Korea and Japan,” he said.

Meanwhile, Riot said the route which they took during the expedition showed development has indeed taken place in the Bidayuh heartland.

“The road we passed through just now showed that we already have good road network in the Bidayuh heartland,” he said.
