SIBU, July 7: About 25 residents from seven families lost their homes after Rumah Norliza in Sungai Menyan was destroyed in a fire today.

Head of the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (Bomba) Zone 4 Sarawak, Senior Superintendent I, Janggan Muling said, his department received a distress call at 1.20 pm and two teams from the Sibu Jaya Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) and BBP Kanowit were deployed to the fire’s location.

“Preliminary investigations found the origin of the fire was believed to be from a room in the longhouse, before the fire spread to other parts,” he said.

He said five rooms occupied by 19 people were totally destroyed while the other two rooms occupied by six people were only 10 per cent damaged.

According to him, firefighters are still at the location carrying out the extinguishing operation.

He added that no casualties were reported and the cause of the fire will be investigated by the Forensics Unit of Bomba Zone 4 Sarawak. — DayakDaily
