KUCHING, July 26: A repeat offender was sentenced to 24 months in prison by the Magistrates’ Court here for injuring two men using a machete and a hockey stick in an early morning assault outside a nightclub in Tabuan Jaya.
The attack, which took place around 3.30am on March 4, was believed to be motivated by revenge, as one of the victims had previously lodged a police report against the accused over suspected criminal activity.
The 33-year-old accused, Ozzy, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing harm with dangerous weapons. The charges were read before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan.
According to the first charge, Ozzy and an accomplice who is still at large intentionally caused injuries to a 26-year-old man using a machete and a hockey stick, both classified as weapons capable of causing death.
The offence falls under Section 324 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34.
For the second charge, Ozzy was accused of injuring a 30-year-old man using a machete at the same time and location. He was also charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code.
Magistrate Mason sentenced him to 10 months in prison for the first charge and 14 months for the second, to be served consecutively.
According to the facts of the case, the victims were at a nightclub when Ozzy and another individual approached and suddenly attacked one of them, striking him on the head with the machete and hockey stick.
A friend of the victim who attempted to intervene was also slashed with the machete.
Following a police report lodged by the victims, Ozzy was arrested on July 18 at an apartment complex. Investigations revealed that the accused had taken offence after one of the victims informed the police about his alleged involvement in a series of cable thefts around Kuching and Padawan.
In a separate case heard before another Magistrate’s Court, Ozzy was fined RM3,500 or six months’ imprisonment in default for stealing telecommunications cables belonging to a private company.
The crime, which was committed with the assistance of five accomplices, was caught on video and later went viral on social media.
Police are still hunting for Ozzy’s accomplices in both cases. — DayakDaily
