Residents evacuated in Desa Wira area as flood waters continue to rise

KUCHING, Jan 19: Several residents in Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Desa Wira were evacuated as flood waters continue to rise following continuous rainfall since last night.

According to a report by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Batu Lintang’s rescue team evacuated flood victims in the area at 10.30 this morning after receiving a distress call about the situation at 10.20am.

The victims have been relocated to their relatives’ house while waiting for temporary evacuation centres (PPS) to open.

Meanwhile, heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong wind warnings have been issued for Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah dan Kapit (Song and Kapit) until 1pm today.

In an advisory notice issued at 8.30am, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) predicted heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds in the affected districts.

The warning is triggered when a thunderstorm with rainfall exceeding 20mm per hour is expected to last for more than an hour.

Thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts, valid for up to six hours per issuance.
