KUCHING, Dec 2: A 38-year-old unemployed man was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment and one stroke of the cane by the Sessions Court here today for assaulting his elderly mother with a PVC pipe, which investigators later found was only the latest in a series of abusive incidents she had endured.

Judge Iris Awen Jon ordered the jail term for Kasturi Junyi to take effect immediately after he changed his plea to guilty when the case was brought up for hearing.

Kasturi was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A, for voluntarily causing hurt to his 63-year-old mother in an incident at their family home in Kampung Bako Hulu on April 26, 2025, at around 8am.

According to case details, the accused struck his mother with a white PVC pipe while holding a pair of scissors in the other hand. The assault left the victim with pain and bruising on her right leg. Alarmed by the attack, the woman contacted another son for help.

When the son arrived, Kasturi allegedly attempted to lunge at him as well, but the mother managed to intervene and prevent further violence. Fearing for the safety of the family, she lodged a police report, leading to Kasturi’s arrest the following day.

Investigators later found that the incident was not isolated and that similar episodes of assault had occurred previously. Police noted that the PVC pipe, when used as a weapon, was capable of causing fatal injuries, and the victim suffered soft-tissue damage to her right calf.

During sentencing submissions, Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff urged the court to impose a deterrent custodial sentence, highlighting the seriousness of the offence, the recurring nature of such domestic violence cases, and the need to uphold public interest and social justice.
