KUCHING, Oct 18: The recent accident that claimed the life of a motorcyclist at Jalan Tanjung Durian in Bau, should serve as a reminder on the need to repair and upgrade the road stretch.
Puncak Borneo MP Willie Mongin said while it has not been ascertained as to what caused the accident, the road should undergo a major upgrade nevertheless, considering the volume of traffic on the Bau road each day.
“A proposal has been submitted by the state JKR (Public Works Department), under the Mid-Term Review of the 11th Malaysia Plan, to upgrade the road from single carriageway to dual carriageway.
“I hope the proposal will be given due consideration by the government for the benefit of road users in this area,” he said in a statement.
Willie said the Bau road is under the state JKR purview and maintenance is carried out by concessionaire CMS Road. The federal government provides funds for maintenance works under the Malaysian Road Records Information System (MARRIS) allocation.
“About 3km of the road stretch is rutting and damaged due to the frequency of overloading lorries. According to the Kuching divisional engineer, CMS Road has been instructed to carry out repairs and improvement works immediately on the affected section of the road,” he continued.
On Monday (Oct 15), a motorcyclist died on the spot when his machine collided with a lorry at Jalan Tanjung Durian, Bau, near here. The motorcyclist was identified as Zaidin Roseli, 55. The lorry driver escaped unhurt in the incident.
Willie expressed his condolences to the family of the late Zaidin. — DayakDaily
