KUCHING, March 4: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) distributed 2,603 reusable water bottles to SJK Chung Hua No. 3, SJK Chung Hua No. 5, and SK Lumba Kuda for free to reduce plastic use.

MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng handed over the water bottles sponsored by Junior Chamber International (JCI) Padawan to the respective school principals at the council headquarters last Monday (Feb 28).

In line with its commitment towards a sustainable environment, Wee emphasised the need to educate children about the importance of reducing plastic use in their daily lives.

“We need to teach the children about recycling from a young age and put that into practice to become a habit.

“We start with ‘Bring your own water bottle’ to school, and I believe the students will find this bottle very useful,” he said in a press release today.

Wee pointed out that every citizen needs to protect the environment by adopting the 3R concept of reducing, reusing, and recycling.

“Children should be exposed to this information. Creating awareness from primary school years is the first step,” he added.

He also encouraged adults and parents to lead by example by practising 3R at home as continuous efforts and consistency are key to forming good habits.

He is also proud of students who are active in protecting the environment by participating in MBKS’ ‘No Plastic Straw Campaign’.

SJK Chung Hua No. 3 represented by Choo Chin Moi received 1,323 water bottles, SJK Chung Hua No. 5 represented by Chin Mui Ling received 882 water bottles, and SK Lumba Kuda represented by Richard Kawi received 398 water bottles.

Wee also thanked JCI Padawan for the sponsorship.

Councillors Kho Teck Wan, Bong Lian Huan, and Yong Li Na, as well as Johnny Bong, a member of JCI Padawan, were also present. — DayakDaily
