Recent Kapit flood to serve as Bomba model for landas response

SIBU, Oct 22: Sarawak Bomba will be using the September flood in Kapit as a model in the handling of flood victims in the coming monsoon season during this Covid-19 pandemic.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director, Khirudin Drahman said today that during the flood in Kapit on Sept 14 and 15, those affected were fully cooperative and complied with the standard operating procedure (SOP).

“For the year-end flood, the issue here is how to get the victims to follow the SOP guideline. We had tested the matter during the Sept 14 and 15 flood in Kapit. We found that there was full compliance with the SOP. For example, victims at the evacuation centre were observing social distancing,” he said.

Parents, he added, were also controlling their children well.

At the evacuation centre, hand sanitizser was also provided.

“In any normal flood, the situation can be chaotic but not during the recent Kapit flood. The cooperation between the SDMC (State Disaster Management Committee) and other relevant agencies was also very good,” Khirudin revealed.

On the department’s preparation for the flood, he said it had issued directives to all fire stations statewide to ensure that all their assets are in good working condition.

“Leave applications from firefighters would only be approved for important matters. All stations have also conducted training on rescue and proper boat handling,” he added. — DayakDaily
