KUCHING, Jan 3: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) today rolled out its first Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Smart Pole pilot project aimed at monitoring air quality in public parks.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the initiative would help enhance daily living and support the development of a smarter, healthier Kuching.

“A Smart City is not merely defined by advanced technology or digital infrastructure. A truly smart city is one that uses data intelligently to protect public health, enhance liveability and support informed decision-making at both the individual and community levels,” he said at the launch ceremony held at the MBKS headquarters.

He noted that the project aligns with Sarawak’s Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS), which prioritises sustainability, digital transformation and people-centred development.

Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, commended MBKS for its forward-looking approach and leadership in implementing people-centric Smart City initiatives.

“This is a significant step forward, as air quality is closely linked to public health, especially for children, senior citizens and those with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions,” he said.

For the pilot phase, ESG Smart Poles have been installed at Kuching Park and Palmairum Park, both popular venues for recreation and community activities.

He explained that the Smart Poles are equipped with digital display boards that allow park users to check real-time air quality levels.

“This enables members of the public to make informed decisions on whether conditions are suitable for activities such as walking, jogging or exercising outdoors.

“This is particularly beneficial for vulnerable groups, especially during periods of haze or fluctuating environmental conditions,” he added.

Dr Sim said the initiative aims to promote healthier communities, raise public awareness and accelerate Kuching’s progress as a smart and liveable city.

MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili and other distinguished guests were also present at the launch. — DayakDaily
