LUNDU, Jan 8: The Rambungan Sustainable Shrimp Aquaculture Project is poised to make a significant impact, setting a target of 1,349 metric tonnes in annual production and generating RM27 million annually in exports by 2031.
In news reports by TVS and the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Minister for Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom emphasised that Sarawak is advancing its aquaculture sector through a large-scale shrimp farming initiative that blends modern technology with sustainable practices.
“Additionally, 94 new shrimp farming ponds are planned for construction next year in the same area, aiming to significantly increase the production of premium shrimp for both domestic and international markets,” he stated following the Shrimp Harvesting Programme at Rambungan Aqua Life Sdn Bhd in Loba Stoh, Rambungan today.
The project, a collaboration between Seahorse Company and the Sarawak State Farmers’ Organisation (PPNS), adheres to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards to meet the stringent requirements of global markets, including Singapore and Europe.
Dr Rundi highlighted the importance of ESG compliance in positioning Malaysia as a leading exporter of high-quality shrimp.
“ESG principles ensure responsible waste management and align with the circular economy concept. This commitment to sustainability provides local products with a competitive edge in global markets,” he added.
He further highlighted that the initiative not only serves as a vital economic driver but also aligns with Sarawak government’s broader strategy to ensure resource sustainability and national prosperity.
“The government is committed to providing comprehensive support, including technical advice, financial assistance, and more, particularly in the early stages of the project,” he said.
Currently, Rambungan Aquatic Sdn Bhd has been granted permission to use 297 hectares of land for shrimp farming.
