SIBU, Dec 18: The total result for the N53 Bawang Assan seat is expected before 9pm tonight.

Today, returning officer Suhaili Mohamed said that some polling stations with less than 6,000 votes would already have the results between 12pm and 2pm.

“The ballot boxes will arrive at the Sibu-Kapit Express boat terminals before 2pm. They will then be sent to the Civic Centre where the full result is expected before 9pm,” he said.

The seat has 19,160 registered voters, and there are 25 polling centres comprising 53 polling streams.

Suhaili said despite the heavy shower, which started at 7.30am, it did not stop the people from exercising their right to vote.

“I was here (SJK (C) Chung Hua) before voting started at 7.30am, and right away it began to rain. But I can see the turnout is okay,” he said.

The constituency sees a five-cornered fight among incumbent Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) president Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) Robert Lau Hui Yew, Parti Bumi Kenyalang’s (PBK) Michelle Ling Shyan Mih, Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) Amy Lau Bik Yieng, and Independent candidate Ricky Entrie.
