KUCHING, Aug 15: The UCCN Gastronomy Pavilion at the Kuching Food Festival has been closed for two days after strong winds and heavy rain this evening damaged part of its marquee tent, even as the much-anticipated downpour brought relief from days of hot, dry and hazy weather in the city.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the strong winds caused the middle section of the pavilion’s marquee tent to be blown off, affecting several stalls in the area.
He said no injuries were reported and everyone at the site was safe.
“As a precaution and to allow our team to carry out a full inspection, clean-up and necessary repair works, the UCCN Gastronomy Pavilion will be closed today, Aug 15, and tomorrow, Aug 16,” he said in a statement today.
However, he stressed that the closure only affected the UCCN Gastronomy Pavilion.
“All other stalls and activities at the Kuching Festival Fair are not affected and will continue to operate as usual,” he said.
Wee said the safety of vendors, workers and members of the public remained MBKS’ highest priority, particularly given the current weather conditions.
“We do not want to take any unnecessary risks,” he said.
He added that MBKS personnel were already at the site to assess the damage and make the necessary arrangements to secure the affected structures and surrounding area.
Wee also apologised for any inconvenience caused and thanked vendors and members of the public for their understanding and cooperation. — DayakDaily
