KUCHING, Dec 4: The much-awaited musical drama ‘Putri Santubong ― The Warrior Princess’ will be staged at Sarawak Cultural Village on Dec 11 and 12.
Organised in line with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) Sarawak, it aims to promote homegrown cultural and musical events inside its International Event Calendar. The event will be streamed live through its website (www.putrisantubong.com).
“Virtual events have been adopted as an approach to reach a more significant number of participants and provide a great way to host large-scale events digitally.
“In times of the Covid-19 crisis, with thousands of events cancelled, we need to place ourselves in the forefront to maintain continuity of promotion of arts and culture and also business opportunities,” MOTAC minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said at a press conference today.
He also introduced celebrities, namely Maya Karin as Putri Santubong, Azreal Ismail (Kijang Mas), Soffi Jikan (Iswaraja), Dewi Liana Seriestha(Putri Sejinjang), and Anding Indrawani (Dato Nakhoda), as cast members of the musical drama.
Explaining the theme, Abdul Karim said ‘Putri Santubong ― The Warrior Princess’ tells the epic legend of the greatness and glory of an empire under the reign of Putri Santubong, who built civilisations in Nusantara.
It attempts to unlock a different dimension of public perception of Putri Santubong as a warrior princess rather than a more well-known folktale of a duel to the death between two princesses over the love of a prince.
“It is a mythical drama depicting the birth of a powerful Malay kingdom that grew into a flourishing society that has developed advanced technologies in agriculture, weaving, and culture, including music, dance, and crafts.
“Rising from the depths of the South China Sea stood a majestic mountain of unknown origin, now known as Gunung Santubong. According to the legend, high above the mountains, shrouded in thick mist and clouds, lies the mystical Kayangan, a land populated by mythical beings with supernatural abilities and ruled by a powerful princess, Putri Santubong,” he added.
What follows would be a series of explosive actions packed with dances and songs in a night of magic to be staged live at the Sarawak Cultural Village in Damai.
Abdul Karim asserts that the musical drama is a story of adventure, fierce loyalties, and sacrifices of the battle between good and evil forces, jealousies and revenge.
It is an epic drama interlaced with the romance between the mystical beings and the people on earth.
The ‘Putri Santubong ― The Warrior Princess’ trailer was officially launched on Nov 7.
This trailer was shown on the official website and social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and KLooK.
