KUCHING, July 12: Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Datuk Willie Mongin today received a courtesy call from Deputy High Commissioner of Singapore High Commission Shivakumar Nair and First Secretary (Political) in Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur Ying Xin Ting.

The courtesy call at Willie’s service centre along Jalan Borneo Height was to discuss how the people in Puncak Borneo could benefit from bilateral ties between both regions.

“The visit today is basically to discuss about scholarships opportunities and trade and investment links between Singapore and Sarawak and how the people of Puncak Borneo can take advantage of it.

“They would also like to hear from me about the economic opportunities and challenges for the people in Puncak Borneo and how my experience at the Federal level can help my work in Puncak Borneo,” Willie said at a press conference later.

The Puncak Borneo MP said he will help with the tourism potential in the area and Sarawak in general.

Meanwhile, Shivakumar said Sarawak and Singapore has very close ties.

“The people-to-people link between Singapore and Sarawak is excellent and there are lots of opportunities like scholarships, trade and investment for us to discuss,” he said.

On a separate note, Willie said the plunge in prices of oil palm was due to several factors like foreign currency, logistics problems and Indonesian’s government now allowing the export of the commodity.

Another factor, according to him, was the surplus supply of the commodity in the market from the old stock, adding that there will be a price correction later on when the old stock is depleted. — DayakDaily
