Puncak Borneo MP proposes forest planting to generate income for NCR landowners

KUCHING, Feb 18: Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Datuk Willie Mongin has proposed for the implementation forest plantation commodities involving several timber species to generate income for bumiputera with Native Customary Rights (NCR) land in Sarawak.

According to a news report from the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) today, Willie made the proposal to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during a courtesy call to his office at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, today.

“About 30 per cent of our NCR land which is in the highlands area is not utilised, and it can be developed for forest plantation because this forest plantation does not need much intensive care.


“So it is very suitable for those who own the land and have other jobs as well, as this can be their side cultivation,” he said.

During the courtesy call, Willie also discuss about the cooperation between Sarawak and Federal government in the agricommodity sector.

Meanwhile, Willie, who is also Puncak Borneo MP), expressed his support to the Chief Minister for approving the Sarawak Rubber Industry Board (Sarib) and Sago and Nipah Development Board (SNDB) to strengthen the economy for rural areas in Sarawak.

He said it was a good move to strengthen and improve the nipah and sago as well as the rubber industries in the State.

He also believed that such a move would enable the entrepreneurs involves in nipah and sago as well as the rubber industries to come up with a strategy to empower the agricommodity industry in Sarawak. — DayakDaily
