KUCHING, April 16: Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin said he is more than prepared to defend the seat for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in the coming 15th General Election (GE15) if given the green light.

He said as the incumbent, he would defend the seat, but under which party remains to be seen and would leave the decision to leaders in Bersatu, which he is a member of, and GPS.

“For me, I will work together with any political party that fights for development and the people’s welfare.

“So, I am leaving it to the parties’ leaders because they can evaluate my achievements and efforts when it comes to helping the people.

“But whatever it is, I will defend the seat, and I hope they can give me their blessings so that we can work together for more progress,” he told reporters today.

Willie, who is Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodity, said this after the opening of the Persatuan Segu Benuk Penrissen (PSBP) office at Kampung Segu Bunuk, Jalan Borneo Heights.

He also pointed out that he has helped three of GPS’ candidates in the Serembu, Tarat, and Mambong constituencies in the last State election, telling his supporters to support them as all three seats are under Puncak Borneo.

“I hope that they reciprocate what I have done (to help them) because I believe that cohesiveness is important for us to move forward,” he stressed.

During the 14th General Election in 2018, Willie won the seat under the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) ticket.

He secured 18,865 votes to defeat Barisan Nasional’s Jeannoth Sinel (14,860 votes) and then State Reform Party’s (STAR) Buln Patrick Ribos (795 votes).

Later in 2020, Willie left PKR for Bersatu.

Previously, it was reported that Willie hoped that GPS would assist him when it came to defending the Puncak Borneo seat for GE15.

He said that he would leave it up to the leaders in Bersatu and GPS to discuss and added that if GPS wanted him to use their logo to defend Puncak Borneo, he’d do it. — DayakDaily
