KUCHING, Nov 15: Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii has proposed that the Sarawak government offer one free round-trip airfare per year to Sarawakian students studying outside the State who maintain a CGPA of 3.0 or higher.
This initiative, he emphasised, would not only ease the financial burden on families but also serve as a motivation for students to excel academically.
In addition, Yii suggested implementing a multi-tiered system for the special financial assistance offering RM1,200 annually to Sarawakian students pursuing tertiary education across Malaysia.
“Students who achieve and maintain excellent academic scores could be eligible for higher financial assistance, while still ensuring a baseline of RM1,200 per student,” he said during the Sarawak Budget 2025 debate at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting today.
He commended the introduction of the RM1,200 assistance programme as a thoughtful measure to support students from lower-income families, enabling them to focus on their studies without undue financial stress.
However, Yii stressed the importance of enhancing these initiatives to nurture a generation of talented and high-achieving individuals who remain connected to Sarawak and are motivated to contribute to its future.
“By investing in these students, we lay a strong foundation for a knowledgeable and skilled workforce, which is crucial for Sarawak’s future as a high-income and competitive region,” he added. — DayakDaily
