KUCHING, July 24: Sarawak Energy Berhad has issued an alert to members of the public to remain vigilant against fraudulent emails impersonating the electricity provider and its retail arm, Syarikat Sesco Berhad (Sesco).

The company said the phishing emails were not issued by Sarawak Energy and were part of attempts by scammers to misuse the company’s name, branding and identities of its employees to appear legitimate.

According to Sarawak Energy, the fraudulent emails are aimed at deceiving recipients into revealing confidential information, making payments to unauthorised bank accounts, or clicking on malicious links and attachments that could compromise personal and financial data.

The company reminded customers that Sarawak Energy would never request passwords, one-time passwords (OTPs) or other sensitive personal information through email.

Customers would also not be asked to make payments to personal bank accounts or unauthorised payment channels, it said.

“Sarawak Energy is closely monitoring the situation and taking the necessary steps to address the issue,” the company said in a statement today.

Members of the public have been advised to verify the sender’s full email address carefully. While official Sarawak Energy email communications use the @sarawakenergy.com domain, customers are encouraged to independently verify any unusual or unexpected requests through official channels.

The public should also avoid replying to suspicious emails, clicking on unknown links or downloading attachments from unverified sources.

Sarawak Energy further advised customers to directly confirm any requests involving payment instructions or changes to bank account details before making transactions, and to only use authorised billing and payment channels.

Customers should also exercise caution when receiving emails that appear to come from Sarawak Energy employees but contain unusual requests, suspicious links, attachments or inconsistent sender information.

Anyone uncertain about the authenticity of an email, payment request or other communication claiming to represent Sarawak Energy is encouraged to contact the company through its official channels for verification.

Sarawak Energy assured customers that its official billing processes, authorised payment channels and customer service operations remain secure and unchanged.

Members of the public who receive suspicious emails or communications impersonating Sarawak Energy are urged to report them immediately for verification before deleting them. The company said early reporting would help prevent others from falling victim to similar scams.

Reports can be made through Sarawak Energy’s 24-hour Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111, via email at customercare@sarawakenergy.com, or through the SEB cares app. The company assured that all reports will be treated with strict confidentiality and investigated accordingly.— DayakDaily
