SIBU, March 22: The public are advised to be alert when performing online transactions such as making purchases and applying for loans, including buying and selling of old currency through social media so as to avoid falling for scams.

This comes as a 32-year-old teacher was conned of RM2,150 in a non-existent laptop sale on social media.

Sibu district police chief, ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said on March 17, the victim saw an advertisement on Facebook purported to be selling laptops for only RM2,150.

“Subsequently he contacted the suspect who identified himself as Seet Kwee Wen and told him of his intention to buy the laptop,” he said.

Two days later, the victim transferred the amount to the suspect’s bank account.

“After making the payment, he was unable to contact the suspect. He realised that he had been cheated and made a police report on March 21,” said Stanley.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — DayakDaily
