MIRI, March 26: Deputy Minister I for Tourism, Creative industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew expressed great concern regarding the recent spate of robberies in residential areas in Miri City.
Ting, who is Piasau assemblyman, emphasised the need for increased security measures to ensure the safety of residents.
He urged authorities to take prompt action to address the issue and prevent further incidents from occurring.
“The safety and well-being of the community are of utmost importance,” he told the local media after paying a courtesy visit to Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu at Miri Police Headquarters here yesterday, to discuss the recent surge in robberies in Miri.
During the meeting, Ting expressed concerns about the safety of the residents and requested for increased police presence in residential areas.
Alexson assured Ting that the department is already taking the necessary steps to address the issue and urged the community to remain vigilant.
“As the police chief, I understand and share the community’s concern regarding the recent surge in robbery cases. Rest assured, our department is actively working to address this issue and ensure the safety and security of all residents,” Alexson said.
He added that the police have increased patrols in high-risk areas, implemented strategic crime prevention measures, and are collaborating with other law enforcement agencies to apprehend and prosecute those responsible.
“I urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately. Your cooperation and support are crucial to our efforts to combat crime and maintain a safe environment for all,” Alexson said.
On March 20, 21 and 24 respectively, Miri police received reports of three separate robbery cases within the community.
These robberies prompted concerns among the residents and have prompted law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation to apprehend the perpetrators.
In light of these troubling events, Ting called for greater vigilance and cooperation among residents to help prevent future robberies. — DayakDaily
