KUCHING, Dec 6: A private company director from Sibu has fallen victim to an online investment scam, losing approximately RM1 million.
Sarawak Police Chief Datuk Mancha Ata revealed in a statement today that the victim, a man in his 30s, was lured into the scam in November after responding to a Facebook advertisement titled “ARCADIA EQUITY.”
After clicking on the advertisement, the victim was added to a WhatsApp group named “SPDR Finance Business College,” where he began interacting with an individual posing as an investment advisor.
The suspect instructed the victim to download a mobile application called “AR Online” and register an account. Subsequently, the victim was persuaded to transfer money in stages, amounting to RM1 million, into a bank account provided by the suspect.
The scam came to light when the victim was asked to make additional payments and realized he was unable to withdraw any of the purported investment profits.
The police are currently investigating the case, and are urging the public to exercise caution when engaging with online investment platforms and to verify the legitimacy of such opportunities with relevant authorities. — DayakDaily
