KUCHING, Nov 29: Padiberas Nasional Bhd (Bernas) has agreed to reduce the selling price of imported white rice at its warehouse gates in Peninsular Malaysia from RM3,000 per metric tonne to RM2,800 per metric tonne, effective this Sunday (Dec 1).
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu stated that this agreement was the result of recent discussions between the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) and Bernas.
He explained that the price reduction aligns with the global decline in rice market prices and the strengthening of the Malaysian Ringgit against the US Dollar.
“The government is optimistic that this initiative will help ease the cost of living by improving access to and availability of rice supplies at more affordable prices,” he said in a statement today.
Mohamad also noted that KPKM would continue discussions with relevant stakeholders to refine a long-term action plan focused on a more realistic rice production cost structure.
The aim is to ensure the continued growth of the nation’s rice and paddy industry, safeguard the welfare of paddy farmers, and boost the country’s Self-Sufficiency Level (SSR) for rice.
“This decision reflects the Madani government’s strong commitment to the welfare of the people and further reinforces the national food security agenda,” he added. — DayakDaily
