KUCHING, Oct 2: The aerospace and satellite programme is set to launch at i-CATS University College next week, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced.
He emphasised that this initiative is part of the Sarawak government’s mission to offer free higher education by 2026.
“Next week, I will introduce this new discipline. We already have lecturers on board, and we’re collaborating with the UK, the US, and leveraging satellite communication technology from China,” he said in a TVS report.
He made these remarks at the 40th Anniversary Celebration of the Chinese Aided Primary School Board of Management Association for Kuching, Samarahan, and Serian Divisions, held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Tuesday (Oct 1).
“Satellite technology requires spacecraft with specific protocols. Therefore, we must study spacecraft systems, including avionics, which will be incorporated into our students’ training programme,” he added.
The Premier encouraged Sarawakian students to take advantage of this opportunity to enroll in the new Aerospace Faculty, noting that its establishment is a vital step toward realising Sarawak’s goal of developing its own space industry.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, Deputy Chinese Consul-General in Kuching Song Chang Hong, Association chairman Dato Jonathan Chai and Federation of Chinese Associations of Sarawak president Dato Richard Wee were among the distinguished guests present. — DayakDaily
