KUCHING, Aug 1: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg playfully requested villagers to not have too many bendera (laundry or wet clothes) hanging from their houses as it can be an eyesore that offsets the beauty of their villages.
The Premier playfully likened the appearance of drying laundry or wet clothes to flags, telling villagers to take care of the cleanliness and appearance of their houses.
“Orang kampung (villagers), take care of your house, don’t have too many bendera as when there’s too many, it will pollute the environment.
“I saw a village—I won’t say which village is it—it already looked beautiful, and then I saw a towel hanging from one of the houses,” he said at the 35th Kuching City Day celebration at Kuching Waterfront today.
Amidst some amused chuckles from the audience, Abang Johari encouraged villagers to use other methods to dry their laundry, such as dryers, to keep their houses and villages looking clean and beautiful.
Abang Johari’s wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang; Deputy Premier and Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Sarawak, Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian; Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi; Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) mayor, Datu Junaidi Reduan; and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor, Dato Wee Hong Seng were also present. — DayakDaily
