KUCHING, Aug 26: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will join global leaders and energy experts at the International Forum on Pumped Storage Hydropower 2025 in Paris on Sept 9, underscoring Sarawak’s rising role in the global clean energy transition.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, the International Hydropower Association (IHA) on its official website described the forum as the culmination of a worldwide campaign to highlight the importance of pumped storage technology, which currently provides nearly 90 per cent of the world’s long-term energy storage capacity.

“It will bring together international leaders and energy experts to discuss policies and best practices to accelerate the development of energy storage technologies that are critical to the clean energy transition,” the IHA stated.
The forum also reflects the aspirations of the Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge, finalised at COP29 with the participation of 58 countries, which sets ambitious targets including 1,500 GW of global energy storage capacity, doubling grid investment, and building 25 million kilometres of new grid infrastructure by 2030.
Abang Johari, who also helms the portfolios of Minister of Finance and New Economy, Minister of Urban Development and Natural Resources, and Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, will represent Sarawak as a strong advocate of renewable energy, sustainability, and green economy policies.
Under his leadership, Sarawak attained high-income status in 2022, seven years ahead of target, and has since emerged as a regional leader in hydrogen energy, renewable power, carbon trading, and the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from algae biomass.
These efforts are further anchored by the Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint, which charts a long-term strategic roadmap for the state’s transition towards a green economy, alongside the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy that outlines a secure, low-carbon, and inclusive energy future.
“His administration is driving Sarawak’s transformation by leveraging global trends including digitalisation, Industrial Revolution 4.0, the circular economy, and supply chain resilience.
“The Premier has also shared his vision for a green economy and net zero target at various international forums in Europe, Singapore, and Japan,” IHA added. — DayakDaily
