KUCHING, Nov 22: Sarawak’s media fraternity may soon receive a boost as Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has hinted at potential incentives in the pipeline—though details remain tightly under wraps.
Responding to a question on whether the State government is planning media-related incentives, Abang Johari kept his answer light but telling.
“Wait first. If it’s not during the (tabling of Budget 2026), maybe during the winding-up session.
“If we have the funds, there’s no harm in sharing it with the media,” he told reporters when met at Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) headquarters here today.
Pressed on whether the announcement would be made during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting next week, he again kept it brief.
“Wait first…,” he said with a smile, without elaborating.
Although no specifics were revealed, his comments have stirred anticipation within Sarawak’s media industry, which is now watching closely for a possible announcement before the DUS sitting concludes.
His remarks come on the heels of Johor’s recent announcement to provide a one-off RM1,000 incentive to media practitioners in the state, a move that has sparked discussions nationwide on better recognising the role of journalists. — DayakDaily
