KUCHING, Nov 25: Sarawak will be a key player in meeting rising global demand for natural gas with Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) as the sole gas aggregator, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Abang Johari said that Petros will strategically manage the distribution of Sarawak’s natural gas resources to maximise resource potential, strengthen energy security, and catalyse industrial growth for not only Sarawak but also the wider region.
He said this when officiating the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) Summit at the Sheraton Hotel today.
According to him, the Sarawak government rolled out the SGR in 2021 as it recognises the transformative potential of natural gas as a bridge fuel to enable industrial expansion while facilitating Sarawak’s energy transition journey.
He said the forward-looking roadmap is designed to expand gas-based infrastructure and networks, positioning Sarawak as a strategic hub for gas-based industries while enhancing energy access for businesses and communities.
He also said that with global demand for natural gas expected to grow beyond 2030, particularly across Asia, Malaysia’s energy mix is set to see natural gas grow from 43 to 56 per cent between 2023 and 2050 to support the demand.
He added that natural gas signifies the importance of driving economic resilience and energy transition efforts.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari shares that the groundbreaking ceremony for the 500MW Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant is to be held on Nov 30 (Saturday).
He said that part of the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) marks a significant milestone in the State’s journey towards enhanced energy security and power generation capacity for the Northern area. — DayakDaily
