KUCHING, Feb 11: Sarawak has the opportunity to build world-class, sustainable, and inclusive education cities in the Asean region, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Abang Johari said with its diverse cultural heritage, rich history, and dynamic economies, Sarawak has the potential to become a global leader in education and innovation.

“However, to realise this potential, we need to invest in education and research, foster collaboration between universities, schools, and businesses, and create vibrant, inclusive communities that support learning and innovation,” he said during the Asean Education Cities Conference (AECC) 2023 at Sunway University in Selangor today.

Abang Johari said in this context, the role of local governments is crucial.

According to him, by working together and sharing best practices, Sarawak can build education cities that are models for the world.

“We can create supportive, inspiring, and empowering environments for all students, regardless of their background or circumstances,” he said.

Abang Johari said the Sarawak government had implemented various initiatives to retain talent and attract skilled individuals to create a more attractive environment for highly skilled individuals and reduce the region’s brain drain rate.

He believed that developing an integrated, smart, and eco-township could bring many benefits, including promoting green energy, healthy living, sustainability, and a circular economy, modelled especially for Sarawak.

“Sunway and Sarawak can create a unique and innovative community that inspires others to follow.

“Our present decisions will have major implications for future generations, whose ability to lead prosperous, healthy lives depends on what we do today,” he added. — DayakDaily
