KUCHING, July 23: By asserting its rights over oil and gas resources, Sarawak has increased its income, allowing the GPS government to accelerate efforts in building a more developed and competitive state through the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 framework.

According to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, initially, Sarawak was severely lacking in resources, with its people, especially those in rural areas, living in poverty—a stark contrast to its current state.

“Today, we are grateful that Sarawak’s economy has shown remarkable improvement. Last year, Sarawak recorded its highest-ever revenue at RM14 billion. This was an increase from RM13.3 billion in 2023.

“For 2025, I have tabled the largest budget in Sarawak’s history, amounting to RM15.8 billion, which creates opportunities for an inclusive economy and opportunities for all,” he said while officiating at the 2025 Sarawak Day Assembly in Miri on Tuesday (July 22).

The Premier added that, under the powers granted by the Federal Constitution, the State has begun to enjoy increased revenue from its oil and gas through the imposition of the State Sales Tax (SST) on petroleum products, as well as through profit-sharing arrangements between PETRONAS and PETROS.

In addition, he pointed out that statistics show that Sarawak’s trade value has continued to rise from RM136 billion in 2019 to RM199 billion in 2024—an increase of 46 per cent over six years.

“With continued economic growth, I am confident that Sarawak will be able to achieve its target of RM282 billion by 2030, as outlined in the PCDS 2030.

“Looking at all these positive developments, the theme ‘Prosperous and Progressive Sarawak’ is truly fitting with the vision to transform Sarawak into a developed and high-income region by 2030, God willing,” he said.
