KUCHING, Nov 11: The Sarawak government has allocated RM11 million to establish Sarawak Net Zero and Carbon Plan as well as implementation of Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission) Ordinance, 2023.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said these measures represent Sarawak’s commitment to addressing greenhouse gas emissions and positioning itself as a renewable energy powerhouse in the region.
“We are a key player in Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap, with plans to develop a green hydrogen hub.
“This emerging hydrogen economy opens exciting opportunities for investment–from cutting-edge technologies like electrolysers and fuel cells to energy storage and sustainable transport.
“By embracing collaboration, strong policies, and continuous innovation, we can build a future powered by clean, sustainable energy,” he said when tabling the Supply (2025) Bill, 2024 during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting here today.
Abang Johari, who is the Sarawak Minister of Finance and New Economy, further said Sarawak is leveraging forest carbon initiatives as part of its greenhouse gas reduction strategy, focusing on conserving and restoring forests.
The Forests (Forest Carbon Activity) Rules, 2022, establish a regulatory framework for these projects, covering forest carbon permits, carbon credit administration, and carbon sequestration monitoring.
“In alignment with its climate change strategy, Sarawak has issued four forest carbon permits covering 130,037 hectares. The issuance of these permits marks a pivotal achievement, reflecting Sarawak’s dedication to sustainable forest management while simultaneously creating new revenue opportunities through the sale of carbon credits in international markets.
“For 2025, RM1.5 million will be allocated for forest carbon projects in Sarawak,” he added. — DayakDaily
