KUCHING, July 19: Sarawak’s plan to build a deep sea port in Kuching, embracing a gas terminal hub and a new international airport will commence by 2028.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the two projects which are currently being studied, are part of the next significant strategic infrastructure plan of the State.
“These two projects will be implemented by 2028 after the completion of current feasibility studies,” he said during the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Sarawak government and Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT) held in Kuala Lumpur today.
On May 15, Abang Johari revealed that the Sarawak government is currently conducting a study to look into building a new Kuching International Airport following the inadequacy of the existing one in catering for increased flights and passenger load, and for the fulfilment of Sarawak’s vision to be a regional aviation hub for ASEAN.
Meanwhile, based on a previous report dated April 15, Abang Johari announced that the Sarawak government is set to build a new deep sea port in Tanjung Embang, Gedong.
This is linked to a signing of an MOU between Antwerp-Bruges Port and Hubline Berhad at Antwerp, Belgium on July 26, 2022, in the presence of Abang Johari himself.
It is worth noting that on May 7, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has clarified that the Sarawak government has appointed an unnamed consultant to undertake the feasibility study for the deep sea port project. — DayakDaily
