KUCHING, April 14: Sarawak could be building houses with 3D printers in the near future.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg implied saying that he had recently sent a team from Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) to China to learn about the new technology.
“So, we learn from China, and I’m going to change how we (Sarawak) build houses. This is a new way (of constructing houses),” he said.
With 3D printing, Abang Johari said, Sarawak can build houses faster and depend less on foreign workers.
Meanwhile, he added, local talents equipped with the related skillsets could be paid higher for their expertise.
“If you can master the technology, of course, those involved in construction can be paid higher. That’s what we call a high-income economy,” he told reporters after launching the Sumbangsih Raya 2023 handover ceremony held at Wisma Bapa Malaysia today.
In the construction industry, 3D printing is one of the latest technologies some countries adopt to create construction components or ‘print’ entire buildings with large-scale 3D printers.
