KUCHING, Aug 4: The Sarawak government will look into the call for Old SGH Nurses’ Quarters to be preserved, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He noted that Sarawak Heritage Society (SHS) has written to him, calling for the preservation of the nurses’ quarters located at the junction of Jalan Crookshank and Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg opposite Sarawak General Hospital here.

“We will look into this matter because I don’t know the heritage value of the nurses’ home.

“If it’s like the Kuching General Post Office or Kuching Central Police Station, they have been declared as heritage sites including Chung Hua Middle School No. 4.

“But for the nurses’ home, it’s either has a historical value or just a place to train nurses,” he told reporters after the ‘Gabenor Pertama Sarawak Tun Openg’ (First Sarawak Governor Tun Openg) book launch at Hikmah Exchange here today.

Earlier, SHS in a statement, urged the Premier to intervene and halt the complete destruction of the nurses’ quarters which they viewed as an integral element of Sarawak’s heritage.

It was reported that there is a plan to repurpose the site as a water retention pond to aid in flood mitigation for surrounding areas. — DayakDaily
