KUCHING, Nov 19: The Federal government will introduce carbon trading legislation in the Dewan Rakyat session sometime next month, drawing inspiration from Sarawak’s landmark carbon trading law — the first ever in Malaysia.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak remains the only State in Malaysia with standalone carbon trading legislation, having enacted the Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission) Ordinance 2023 in November 2023.

This law regulates carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) activities and provides a framework for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, positioning Sarawak at the forefront of Malaysia’s sustainability initiatives.

“We are the only State to have a law regulating CCUS, and the Federal government is now looking at our legislation (as a model) where they are going to introduce (their version of) legislation in December–the current session (of Dewan Rakyat).

“We are the first State to have a law that regulate CCUS so much so the Federal government has come and learn from us.

“With that, I think the whole sustainability issues and ecosystem are being implemented in Sarawak,” he said when delivering his keynote address at RAM Conference Sarawak 2024 held at Sheraton Hotel Kuching here today.

On June 12 this year, Deputy Prime Minister Dato Seri Fadillah Yusof revealed that the Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim has instructed him to look into studying Sarawak’s carbon trading law and a Bill on carbon trading laws will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat by the end of the year. — DayakDaily
