KUCHING, June 8: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has proposed the name ‘Siti Hajar’ for 70-year-old Gulang Satian, a new Muslim convert from Miri, in a symbolic gesture during an Aidiladha event in Gedong.

According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, Gulang, who embraced Islam in November 2023 and now resides in Kampung Semelap Ulu, Gedong, was among the recipients of sacrificial meat distributed at the ‘Majlis Penyerahan Lembu dan Daging Korban DUN N26 Gedong’ officiated by the Premier today at Al-Kawthar Mosque.

The mother of five was visibly moved and expressed deep appreciation for the name, which the Premier said was inspired by Siti Hajar—the wife of Prophet Ibrahim AS—whose legacy of sacrifice is honoured in Islamic history and pilgrimage rituals.

Ukas further reported that Abang Johari, who is also Gedong assemblyman, explained that the name reflects strength and faith, drawing from the story of Siti Hajar’s perseverance between Safa and Marwah and Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience in the ritual of ‘korban’, which marks the essence of Aidiladha. — DayakDaily
