KUCHING, Aug 19: There is no harm in Sarawak issuing carbon storage licenses prior to the establishment of the carbon trading law at the national level, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
According to Abang Johari, the issuance of the license falls under Sarawak law jurisdiction.
“Sarawak also has its own law on carbon storage,” he told reporters when met after the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing and exchanging ceremony between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) at Hilton Hotel here today.
Abang Johari said that currently, the only obstacle is the transboundary transport of carbon.
He also said that the Sarawak government is waiting for the federal government to come up with a law on this matter because it falls under the federal government’s jurisdiction.
“I was made to understand that the law will be present in the Parliament sitting in November this year,” he added. — DayakDaily
