KUCHING, Nov 8: Improved road and bridge connectivity in Baram is helping open up previously isolated rural areas, paving the way for new economic opportunities through modern technology.
According to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, better infrastructure and connectivity would link Baram to other areas, creating opportunities for more inclusive development.
“With these connectivity links in place, the area will no longer be isolated.
“With new technology, we can develop Baram. Among the possibilities is the use of modern technology such as carbon trading,” he said at a Deepavali open house luncheon hosted by Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Association Kuching president Dato Shankar Ram Asnani here today, as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).
Ongoing efforts include constructing a road from the Federation of Orang Ulu Associations Sarawak Malaysia (FORUM) building through Marudi, and a completed bridge to improve access to the interior.
He added that the route from Marudi to the Ulu area, spanning approximately 140 kilometres, was also part of efforts to strengthen connectivity in the region.
With improved accessibility, Baram will be able to leverage modern technology, including carbon trading activities, which could become a new source of economic growth.
At the same time, the Premier stressed that Sarawak’s development must continue to be strengthened to prepare for changes in the global economic landscape leading up to and beyond 2030, including embracing technology and developing expertise across various professional fields.
He also emphasised that political stability and social unity were essential foundations for ensuring the continuity of the State’s development and enabling all communities to benefit from Sarawak’s progress.
Also present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian; Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng; Deputy Minister for Utilities and Telecommunications (Sarawak Energy Berhad and PETROS) Datuk Ibrahim Baki; and Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) director Dato Georgina Apphia Ngau.
Earlier, Abang Johari visited the residence of Gurdwara Sahib Kuching president Dato Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira.
After spending nearly an hour at the residence, Abang Johari joined the family in cutting a cake to mark the Deepavali celebration and posed for photographs before departing. — DayakDaily
