KUCHING, June 8: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg personally officiated the ‘Ibadah Qurban’ ceremony by performing the symbolic act of butchering (melapah) sacrificial meat at Wisma SABATI Hall in Petra Jaya here today.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, the event, jointly organised by the Premier’s Department and the Malaysian Government Servants Welfare and Sports Council (MAKSAK) Sarawak branch, saw the Premier arriving at approximately 3.20pm, where he was warmly received before launching the ceremony through the traditional meat-cutting ritual.
Abang Johari also took part in other symbolic acts, including the weighing of qurban meat and the ceremonial mixing of chicken soup, marking the start of the programme held in conjunction with the 2025 Aidiladha celebrations.
Among the dignitaries present were Sarawak Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar, Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, and several deputy ministers and department heads.
The ceremony continued with a video montage on the ‘takbir raya’ and the journey of the Ibadah Qurban programme since its introduction in 2023, followed by the symbolic handover of qurban meat to 10 representatives.
A total of six cows were sacrificed for the programme—four contributed by the Premier himself and two by MAKSAK Sarawak—with over 500 beneficiaries including staff from the Premier’s Department, affiliated ministries, MAKSAK club members, and underprivileged individuals (asnaf) in the Kuching area.
The event concluded with a token of appreciation presented to the Premier by Abu Bakar, and a celebratory meal accompanied by ‘nasyid’ and ‘raya’ song performances. — DayakDaily
