KUCHING, April 14: The Sarawak government will redevelop Kampung Datu Lama in Sibu with modern infrastructure while preserving its original characteristics and culture.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the preservation of the village’s characteristics is important as it portrays its culture that has been passed down, according to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).

Pointing at the success in redeveloping Kampung Darul Hana in Kuching, he believed that the same could be done for Kampung Datu Lama.

“The redevelopment of the village which includes the area from An-Nur Mosque to the banks of Sungai Igan will also see the construction of houses with modern designs that are safer and more comfortable.

“We will also beautify the banks in Sungai Igan with attractive features including constructing a convention centre,” said Abang Johari in his speech when officiating at the Sibu Division Hari Raya Aidilfitri gathering held at Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor Hall at University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) in Sibu, yesterday (April 13).

Meanwhile, Abang Johari disclosed that the master plan for the redevelopment of Bukit Assek in Sibu has been completed.

He said all details will be finalised in first quarter of 2025 while the implementation will be divided into four phases that will begin in 2026.

He also said that the redevelopment of Bukit Assek will take 15 years and is expected to be completed in 2040. — DayakDaily
