KUCHING, July 8: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has approved an allocation to build an astronomy centre in Kuching.
“This centre will allow research work on our planetary system as well as the field of astronomy to be carried out and shared with the universities in the region,” he said at the launching of the ‘Karnival Falak Nusantara’ astronomy programme at Kuching Waterfront today.
Abang Johari said that Sarawak’s financial strength would propel the State to move forward in science and technology.
“Sarawak’s future revenue and income are much brighter with the World Bank acknowledging us on our high-income status, which surprised me,” he said.
“This year, we have an income figure that has also increased, but I will not share (it) with you all (yet)—let me explore it first,” he said.
Speaking on the programme, he hoped that it could raise awareness of the importance of science and physics in the civilisation of human development.
Sarawak Deputy Minister of Utilities, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, who is also in charge of Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and Islamic Affairs, was also present.
The centre, dubbed ‘Pusat Astronomi Borneo’ (Borneo Astronomy Centre), was previously reported to be built in the Pantai Damai constituency. — DayakDaily
